Back Bay/South End major filling begins.

1855

The Boston Water Power Company fills 300 acres of flats in the Back Bay, creating land in today’s Back Bay and South End north of Tremont Street, in what is now called the St. Botolph neighborhood, the Prudential Center, and from Massachusetts Avenue to a line between Fairfield Street and Exeter street. It is completed in the late 1880s.
